MOVIES :: My Top 20

I don’t usually do movie posts because I’m actually not that much of a movie buff. Basically I enjoy watching them but don’t tend to analyse them to pieces like certain other members of my family do. But my youngest child recently asked me what my three favourite movies are and I was surprised how hard it was to narrow it down.

There are the movies I grew up with that are still with me, that I still know all the lines to, and that I so desperately want my kids to enjoy.

There are the movies that “got me” when I was a teenager, in the way they struck a nerve with what it felt like to not fit in and to have your friends mean absolutely everything in the world to you, and when being a vampire looked like a totally plausible and cool thing to do.

There are the movies that woke me up with what it is to be a woman in this world, showing me strong characters who I wanted to laugh with, cry with, have a shot of tequila with, be friends with.

The magic of the movies I’ve taken my own kids to the movies to watch, which we still enjoy at home and won’t ever tire of.

The horror, the violence, the dark and at times twisted humour of Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, and David Fincher.

Here then, with no further commentary and in no particular order, are my all time favourites.

{Technically not actually twenty in total when you include sequels and the ones I’ll inevitably forget and add at the end.}

the first loves

Grease and Grease 2

the celluloid comfort food

The Sound of Music, Purple Rain, Dirty Dancing, Titanic

the coming of age

St Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club, The Lost Boys

the cool chicks flicks

Thelma and Louise, Juno, Whip It

not just for kids

Toy Story {1 & 3}, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter {all of them}

laugh out loud

Bridesmaids, Sisters

the tough guys

Pulp Fiction, From Dusk 'till Dawn, Seven

Have I forgotten some? Probably but that’s what the edit button is for*.

😉

What are some of your favourites?

*Edited to add the ones I forgot: Pitch Perfect 1 & 2, and Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
